Some
people come here just to shop due to the unique nature of the
experience and offerings. Others live in the neighborhood and
love the convenience and selection -- all within walking
distance on streets designed to encourage pedestrian and
non-motorized traffic.

Why a Walkable Town?
They are revolutionary, they're bright, and they're fresh. It
is a truly pedestrian experience that emphasizes people,
restaurants and shops. Balconies on buildings like in New
Orleans, bring people to the street on more than just the ground
level. Farmers Market stalls outside and in the center of the
street, and restaurants with outside seating encourage foot
traffic.
30-55%... That is the projected demand by the year 2010 for
denser, more walkable neighborhoods, according to a USC study. A
Chicago neighborhood discovered that for every $100 spent on an
independent business, $73 went back into the local community.
However, for every $100 spent on a chain business, only $43 went
back into the community.
The study, completed by Civic Economics, the leading firm in
the country for conducting these kinds of analyses, found that
independent business owners had 26% more of their staff locally,
bought more than twice as much of their goods and services
locally, kept more profits locally, and spent more on local
charities.
There are more folks who prefer the walkability,
neighborliness and retail diversity associated with a Main
Street, to the driving anonymity and chain store sameness of
strip malls and big box stores. It's about building an entire
neighborhood, a small town, a comprehensive community of people,
places, and programs. |
